Lore friendly trolls (suggestions and questions)
« am: 11. Apr 2015, 20:12 »
Hello guys. Before I say few suggestions and ask you some question I would like to say that I sadly did not read Tolkien nor any books related to LOTR but from what I read on the internet there are some problems with trolls.

Also I am not sure where should I post this because it is discussion and suggestion in the same time.

Troll Cage - The troll cage is in the game for training mountain trolls. Problem is that model of the cage contains cave troll. Is there any chance for reskin?

Mountain trolls - I recently realized that mountain trolls were not only kind of troll Sauron was using. He was also using his special breed of troll called Olog-hai ( http://lotr.wikia.com/wiki/Olog-hai ) far smarter and stronger than mountain trolls. If I understand this wiki site correctly it were actually Olog-hai that were used in the battle while mountain trolls were actually used basically for moving heavy things. If this is true should not we actually train Olog-hai instead of mountatin trolls? That said I don't know what is visual difference between Olog-hai and mountatin troll. If somebody knows something about this subject I would like to read his informations.

Sunlight - We all heard that trolls will turn into stone in sunlight. I don't know which kinds though because Olog-hai are obviously resistant (which was mentioned on wiki as well) and it is said that it's their advantage over other trolls. But what about Mountain trolls, Cave trolls, Hill trolls and Snow trolls? According to wiki Cave trolls will turn into stone as well but I found on other sites on the internet people who claim that according to Tolkien cave trolls won't turn into stone in sunslight and this rule applies only on Stone trolls (also cave troll in Moria did not turn into stone and there actually was light beam) . But if cave trolls will turn into stone BFTME is pretty lore-breaking :(. I don't know about snow or hill trolls. So anyone knows which trolls will turn into stone? To me it makes perfect sense that this only on Stone trolls (because of the name) but wiki and many people say otherwise.

Hi,
a long time ago, there were Olog-Hai in Edain, they were a very strong melee unit that could simply be recruited at troll cage level 3 and didnt look at all like the fat and clumsy mountain trolls.
They were removed due to the fact that they did pretty much the same as the upgraded armored trolls, i guess.

Yeah, Olog Hai were in older versions of edain then got removed  (i think it was at 3.6). Trolls with different upgrades proved to be much more interesting and useful ingame. And Mordor doesn't seem to lack late game units.

The sun effect on trolls can't be implemented in the game due to engine limitations.

I'm not sure about the visual difference between Trolls and Olog hai. I would say it's like the difference between Orcs and Uruks, and actually that's how they were in Edain; taller and give a less clumsy feeling, with tons of armor from head to toe.
The current idea of Trolls in Edain is that you train your mountain trolls as fighters in early mid game. Then when you upgrade them with armor, you get a sort of Olog Hai with different specialised weapons. This emphasise their specialty in battle as dedicated fighters that are noticeably superior to normal mountain and cave trolls.

This would rather surprise me, as I remember turning trolls into stone with the "Sonnenfackel" (sun torch, no idea how it would be actually called in english) spell.

I just get the feeling that turning such an expensive beast as a troll into stone by... well, whatever it would be, won't be healthy for the gameplay.

Maybe you could imagine something like the darkness spell getting a new role, lasting much longer and making it possible to control trolls, however this sounds really awkward to me.

is that the Lorian spell? Strange. I've never seen it doing such thing, nor heard anyone doing it for that matter :/

Yes, it is.  ;)
Ultimate Lorien spell "Sunflare" ...

And some heroes also have such ability - for example Galadriel blessed, maybe Ered Luin Gandalf, etc.  :)

I am starting to think that only stone trolls will turn into stone on sunlight.

quote from forum about this topic:

"Tolkien says in Letter 153
... they return to mere stone images when not in the dark. But there are other sorts of Trolls beside these rather ridiculous, if brutal, Stone-trolls, for which other origins are suggested."

So it's possible that other trolls won't turn into stone on sunlight .. as far as I know there was a beam of light in Moria and cave troll haven't troubles with it. In every case it is probably safe to presume that they don't like sunlight at least, just like the orcs. Also in BFTME there is always cloudy weather just like in films in presence of the orcs. You may see moving shadows of clouds on the ground and there is also ability to pierce the couds with sunlight.
