Good day,

Something came to mind regarding Gondor elite units.

Aren't Tower Guards, Guards of the Citadel and Defenders of the Citadel essentially the same thing?
According to the Tolkien Gateway website and the Lotr Wikia, there was only the Citadel Guard, which protected the inner most sanctum of Minas Tirith, The Citadel itself. On top of that, they were only used as a stationary unit or as an escort to the King or Steward and did not openly fight.

Although I understand most of them might be needed for balance reasons and Tower Guards are quite iconic units themselves, does Gondor really need all these units?

Consequently, what am I suggesting?
My suggestion was to make the Tower Guard more intimidating and iconic by replacing the Guards of the Citadel unit with them.
Meaning: They become a 5 member squad, are unlocked with forged blades and heavy armour (and banner carriers if I am not mistaken, however it could serve as an interesting addition as well?). Basically, they will then become the hero killers and elite anti-cavalry & monsters with their spears and the role of the Citadel Guard is incorporated into them, while also becoming more lore-accurate themselves. The price of the unit could be decreased if it is deemed necessary to reflect that they cannot switch between spear and sword anymore, but that that function of spear and sword will be split between the Tower Guard and the Defenders of the Citadel in that regard.

Moreover, we could perhaps give the current Citadel Guard cape and overall aesthetic to level 5 Gondor Soldiers and Archers to keep that going for us?

Another idea is to follow the same concept as mentioned above, but tie the Tower Guard, like the Defenders of The Citadel, to Boromir's ring function, since only he would likely order them out of the Citadel, according to the Edain team anyway :P.

This way, what I find to be a gimmicky unit (The Citadel Guard), would be removed from the game while largely maintaining the overall roster of Gondor's Barracks. It would also promote the more frequent usage of Gondor Pikemen, which I feel seem to lose their worth after the late early, mid-game since you can just get Tower Guard to replace them completely in the current version(s).

If you haven't noticed (yet), I find less to be more. Less overlap and confusion gives a more transparent gameplay experience, I think.

Naturally, all thoughts are welcome.

Kind regards.

Technically, the Tower Guards and Citadel Guards are in fact the same unit canonically. If you want to get that technical however, we shouldn't be able to recruit them at all, because all they ever did was guard the 7th level of the city and protect royalty, such as Denethor and Boromir, even while Minas Tirith was burning. So their only purpose if you went full canon with it would be to make them a unit that can guard buildings, or make Denethor recruitable with several of these units following him around. I believe the current system is meant to reflect the regular Guards of the Citadel and the captains of the guard, so perhaps a name change for Citadel Guards to Captains of the Guard would be appropriate, but complete removal of the unit? That seems a bit much to me.

Additionally, Boromirs ring hero unit, the Guardians of the White City, are an extra unit as a reward of the Rings functions, and do not exist canonically at all.
Arise! Arise, Riders of Theoden! Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter! Spear shall be shaken! Shield shall be splintered! A sword day, a red day, ere the sun rises! Ride now! Ride now! Ride, ride to ruin, and the worlds ending! FORTH EORLINGAS!

You might be right yes. Thank you for your reply. I'll be posting some other thoughts I had in the last couple of days in some other topics and I would appreciate it if you could share some thoughts there in due time as well.

Kind regards.
