The Road to Edain Patch 4.2 - Ered Mithrin
« am: 8. Okt 2015, 15:56 »
Greetings, companions of Edain!

The works on Patch 4.2  to present you the elven realm of Lothlorien are going full steam ahead. But our goal is to not only integrate a new faction into the demo but to also incorporate a wide range of bug-fixes, improve several concepts and of course invoke changes to the balance of the gameplay. Recently the supporting-faction of the Iron Hills has been a big theme in the english community. Up until now this role was filled by Lake-town, being the same supporting-faction as for Ered Luin. But as opposed to Ered Luin, it didn't really fit in thematically with the Iron Hills, mainly because the Iron Hills never really had any connections with Lake-town. Although they fought side by side in the battle of the five armies they neither had any kind of  trade connections nor had anything else to do with each other in any way.
Thus we decided to tackle this issue in the meantime and developed a new concept based on the ideas of our community.

ERED MITHRIN

The dwarfs of the Ered Mithrin will be the new supporting-fraction of the Iron Hills and be available as an option besides the normal outpost on the outpost building spots. After the dwarfs fought their battles against the local dragons over the years, the erstwhile dwarf realm of the Grey Mountains is only sparsely populated at the time of the War of the Ring and the Hobbit. Because of that we tried to incorporate this matter in our concept. This proved to be somewhat difficult because a lot of facets are already covered by the faction of the dwarfs. Nevertheless we are quite satisfied with the result.

The dwarfs of the Grey Mountains are hard-nosed  veterans that have been fully trained in the battle against monsters, dragons and beasts. They provide a Bastion as building that can be improved with different upgrades:

- Additional hall of warriors: Raises the recruitment speed by 50%

- Dragon trophy: Lowers the damage of monster in a wide radius by 50% and grants nearby dwarfs +30% damage. The damage bonus will stay 45 seconds after they left the effect radius.

- Defenders of the borders: Mans the bastion with hunters. Additionally grants +30% armor to the summoned tunnels, lonely towers and the summoned citadel.

- Mighty catapult: Arms the bastion with a big catapult that is able to fire over the whole map

The following units may be built in the bastion:

Zealots (melee unit)

Ability: Defiance of the monsterslayers - For 30 seconds the Zelot gai +75% armor vs. fire, magic, ice and poison and can't be knocked down anymore.

Hunters (ranged unit)

Ability: Nail down - The hunters throw a salvo of spears that paralyzes an enemy squad or a monster for 15 seconds. Not usable on heroes.

Dragonslayer (single unit)

Ability: Switch weapon - Switches between morning star (area damage) and sword (high individual damage)

We decided on purple as the colouring scheme for the dwarfs of Ered Mithrin, so that it's a clearly different colour hue in comparison to the other dwarf realms thus providing a clear distinction, moreover it can easily be associated with the overall red hue of the Iron Hills designs.
The pikes of the Hunters and the morning star of the Dragonslayers allowed us to use more design patterns from the Hobbit-movies. However, the basic design of the armour elements is oriented towards our former Veterans-design from prior versions.
We found it quite interesting to not provide a hero for the dwarfs of the Grey Mountains but to instead give them a big catapult that destroys enemies and monster from a distance and thus secures the borders. Each dwarf of the Ered Mithrin is a veteran, thus not needing a figure of inspiration.

We hope that you enjoyed the update and look forward to your feedback!
