Greetings Companions of Edain!

Today, i want to offer you an insight into the background scenes of our updates. The work on Edain requires sometimes a cool head - in many ways. It does not only requires constant quality in the creation and construction of different elements, but it also requires great team spirit and the willingness to accept criticism. A team can only keep survive if all contributors as a gear interlock and accept suggestions and wishes.
The Dwarves of Ered Mithrin are a clear example of how we assess, argue out and then eventually decide for one of many different designs. So it may happen that certain elements Edains undergo proper development stages until a final result is obtained that meets all requirements.

The dwarves of Ered Mithrin

It started with a design that was inspired by the nordic Vikings. The idea was that the dwarves of the grey Mountains make up weapons and armor from the natural resources of the defeated dragons and monsters, almost as a trophy of their daily survival. The armament consisted of dragon scales, helmet and shoulder pads are topped with dragon teeth:
It came to the question of how the Heavy Armor is exactly represented.

It has thus been tinkering with the design:

The helmet of dwarves was criticized. Thus, the helmet has been redesigned, which originated this result:

After some time, and during the development process of the Bastion, the criticism was appropriate that these dwarfs to very reminiscent of the game "Skyrim", although it is actually obvious that a horned helmet is not necessarily the personification of "Skyrim". Furthermore, it was criticized that dwarves were not known to use natural products such as bones, etc. Rather, they have built their armor itself. These criticisms have led to a new approach of Deisgns. It was therefore moved away from horned helmets and dragon scales and trying to find a design that is not too colored pregnant, nevertheless illustrates the wrath of these dwarf veterans:
Now the criticism was that the color "brown" is actually in line with our Erebor dwarves. Accordingly attempt was made to mix the colors, so gray, brown and blue gain admission:
A quote from the internal:
Zitat
Now belonging these dwarfs to Ered Luin or Erebor? I can not decide.

What's the solution to this problem? A custom color interpretation for the dwarves of the Grey Mountains. Starting with the term "gray", this color combination has been developed:
Here, however, a very significant problem has arisen: In the game the dwarves looked like "mud". Visually any feature must be recognizable, something "colored" and "catchy".

So it went back to the color assignment, accompanied with a new sign:
But the old problem still insisted, these dwarfs lacked something "private", which distinguishes them from the Dwarves of other realms.

After much deliberation, we have then ended up with the color purple, which is not only catchy and individually, furthermore it also forms a good connection to the red of the Iron Hills:
You can actually feel that we were on the right track. But something was still missing.

With one last attempt finally succeeded the finished design:

As a last resort we had to make a clear distinction between the starting design and heavy armor - and then it went straight into the dwarven mass production. Fresh from the oven , the dwarves looked like this:

We hope you enjoyed the glimpse behind the scenes - and perhaps also give you something to think about. For us it was once again an interesting experience.
