Multiplayer on Gameranger

(1/2) > >>

Odysseus:
Good day,

After having tried to install Tunggle and it eventually not working in the process, I decided to try Gameranger.

Gameranger works and it is a very clear and straightforward program. Tunggle seems much more complicated, which makes me wonder why ET chose Tunggle as their main server.

Either way, here is my username: Odysseus

Add me, if you will!

Kind regards.

Gnomi:
We think that tunngle is much more straightforward than gameranger - you just choose a network and then play with people there. Additionally you don't have to start the game with gameranger, but can choose when you want to start the game. Those things also cause a lot of work for us, because people forget to turn edain of (as they've played the stadard version before it) and then ask us why there is a mismatch. This sounds stupid, but those things happen all the time.
Additionally gameranger also causes a lot of problems. Some people have more probelms with gameranger, some with tunngle.
(and gameranger never worked good for me, the delays were always much bigger than in tunngle^^)

Odysseus:
I see. Well, Tunngle refuses to work with my NAT protected router, but Gameranger seems to have no problem with it at all. I am aware that the only way to fix this issue is to tweak my router settings, via either the troubleshooter, as re-installing did not work, or by contacting my provider. I still live at home so I can't just do or decide that, unfortunately.

Why not have both? :P

Gnomi:
I've already written why we're not putting gameranger as an official program in our launcher. Just read my comment again. :P (of course there are more points, but I think that's enough)

Lord of Mordor:
At the same time though, I should add that we also have absolutely no problem with people using Gameranger if that's what works better for them :) You could use Hamachi as well if that's what you prefer, there's no rule that Edain can only be played via Tunngle. But we had to choose a program to point new players towards if they want to get into multiplayer, and we chose Tunngle for the two main reasons Gnomi stated: First, it's easier to find other players because we can point people towards an Edain network where other players are already active, while Gameranger has no lobby and you'd have to go picking through the currently active BfME games hoping to find one played with Edain.

And secondly, Tunngle is more easily compatible with Edain because you start the game just as you would normally. Both of these points may not matter as much for more experienced players, but experienced players don't need the Edain Team to explain how to find a multiplayer game anyway. They already know which program they're going to use and who they'll be playing with. So fr our official recommendation, we chose the program we felt was best suited for new players looking to get into Edain Multiplayer.
