The Total Journal
« am: 24. Feb 2016, 20:05 »
The Total War series is probably the most popular historical RTS/TBS of all times, and I'm sure many around here still enjoy playing it, and looking forward for future content.

In this thread I'll occasionally post screenshots and some texts about my adventures throughout history  xD

If you like the idea, feel free to also post your adventures here  ;)

Everyone can post anything Total War; fun game stuff, questions, ideas for scenarios, tactics, army comps, city builds,.....etc

Starting off, here's one from my recent Macedon campaign in DeI mod:

Leukaspidai (The White Shield) are a phalanx of pikemen modelled on their hoplite forebears, and subsequently the Macedonian pike reformes. Their distinct white painted shields, of which they got their name, are emblazoned with the name of their king.
The term Leukaspides first appeared at around ~250 BC already as a pike unit, in service of the Antigonids of Macedon.

It's a pity you play with the shadow settings turned off. The game looks much better with it ;).

Since my laptop would die anyway, I prefer to get great units details followed by good particles and effects, then buildings, then shadows are usually off :P
The scale of battles in DeI means that I would usually have a fight of at least 5000 soldiers all the time.
5000 shadows (+ the shadows of all the trees and buildings) will murder my performance  [ugly]

Though on for example Napoleon I have everything on max, and it works like magic.

Ram the gate!
Elements of the Legio II Italia laying siege to a celtic town beyond the Alpins.
The town isn't particularly rich, but a fair number of slaves is to be expected from this raid.

Well my subject are usually happy with my leadership, and I rarely have PO problems, not to mention revolts  xD
Here's a tip, start by planning out your buildings throughout each province in such a way that you always have positive food and an at least neutral public order change (without a present general).

If you found the building's effects confusing, I'll put up an example from one of my campaigns and try to explain the steps of how to create a perfect prosperous province ;)

Well making a province happy is not hard for me :P. It's the problem that the first turns after conquering a settlement increases the chances of rebellion, and sometimes, but rarely, the population revolts. Though its easy to crush the rebels, a slave revolt is much harder to fight against. Dont worry though I consider myself a good player :P.

What occupation option do you use?? usually when I'm not in short of money I tend to occupy without sacking (which releases all the captured enemies, so no slaves).
Also if you're playing DeI, there's an option to sell slaves which will decrease your slave population in the region.

This is a theme which is part of the official soundtrack of the film Crash (2004).
The reason why I posted it here should be something known by every attendant of this topic...  ;)

It does remind me of Medieval II theme. Though when I heard it the first thing that went to mind was this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GityoGjUj0g

You were very closed  :)

It's a recurrent theme of Rome Total War.
I would often hear it both in the game's menu and in many battle's summaries (sound of defeat, if I'm not wrong).

Honestly its been a very long time since I played the first Rome Total War :P. Speaking about osts which Total War game has the best ost in your opinion? To me the Medieval 2 Total War ost wins by faar from all other Total War games, the extra osts of the Kingdoms expansion makes it even better. Second comes the first Rome. Eventhough Rome 2's ost isnt so "exciting" as the original first one, it does sound mightier and fits far better with the Roman culture imo.

For me Rome 1 got the best music because it actually feels that you're listening to actual old times music, plus it provides a perfect blend with the game that I never seem to tire of.
Medieval II comes next because of pretty much the same reason. Though I can get tired of it sometimes.
I actually like Napoleon's quite a lot. It fits the era perfectly!

I completely agree with hoho  :)
Rome Total War's soundtrack will always remain my favourite one.

Besides, do you know something about the Amazons mystery in Rome Total War?  xD
They are a rebellious population located in the extreme North of the East, in a very hidden and mysterious place among the vast forests, north of the wild and unexplored Scythia.

The settlement – Themiskyra – is surprisingly the only Greek-based settlement in those remote lands.
The legends are thus proven right, as there dwell the legendary Amazons and their dreadful chariots  8-)

You can notice the female-shaped armours and their blonde hair  (**)
And, needless to say, they are one of the most powerful units in the game, with excellent stamina and endurance, akin to the Spartan phalanx.

Well, let's just say that Pergamon won't annoy me for much longer  [ugly]

This is but a small angle of a huge 4000 Macedonian vs ~6000 Pergamonian battle which was one of the best battle vs an AI I ever had. Very intense, the action was spread all over the map. Literally. Macedon came up on top (mostly due to my saving-grace shock cavalry) and the control in asia minor is finally shifting to my advantage.

Coming up next: The final annihilation of Athens!

It has come to it at last. The great battle of our time.
A devastated Athens finds itself defending its very walls in a hopeless battle against the most powerful army that has ever been raised in Greece.

During the course of its campaign throughout Greece, Macedon has managed to build up an unparalleled force of 8000 men (two full stacks) all very well armed and armored, and equipped with all kinds of war machines.

Siege towers, stone throwers, rams, and armored galleys. All to bring down the pride of Athens.

After the smoke of war has settled, the invincible phalanges march to claim their glory!

So it begins.
The first battle in Caesar's campaign in Gaul, and the subjugation of the Tulingi.
Outnumbered by more than 2.5 times, Caesar didn't retreat. How could he? His entire ambition and future of the republic rest appone his success.
The barbarian hordes attacked from all sides, but extreme discipline and unparalleled training allowed the Romans to effectively trade casualties. With a killing rate of 10 to 1, the battle turned into a slaughter.
barely 20% of the enemy armies remained, of which the majority declared loyalty to Rome!

A new day, a new journey..
Started a new campaign after DeI got updated. Now with a beta 1.15 version that incorporates one of the most interesting systems that I've ever seen in a Total War; a full population system with various parameters that contribute to your growth, prosperity, and your ability to recruit armies pretty much as it is in real life xD

This is actually the first time ever I play as Parthia, and it was GLORIOUS!

I have recently immersed myself again into the wonders of Rome 2, and I must admit it was a very pleasant return for me to the Total War series. Albeit a bit of disappointment when I had first played the game a couple of years ago, I had the opportunity to explore again the positive, well positive, sides of this chapter; leaving aside initial issues and controversy, it would be greatly unfair to the game, if one didn't acknowledge the great lot of work behind every detail and feature (historically speaking, in particular).

So, whilst expanding the majesty of Rome in the most cruel ways, and after bloody wars against barbarian tribes or decaying eastern empires, I rediscovered the considerable potential of this universe; which is probably the only platform that really allows one to live a truly strategic, tactical and historical adventure! All this pondering and tinkering, reinforced by my endeavour to make England an oceanic superpower in Empire Total War, led inevitably to me daydreaming about my ever-persistent desire to see a future Imperialism/WW1/WW2 chapter, with all the immensely diverse possibilities of the case. Something that would bring diplomacy, war, management of territories and strategy to a whole different level. What would you say about it? Would you deem that a promising outcome?

Ancient Egypt, Syria and Mesopotamia would be a really awesome era that has probably never been well explored in games.
I would also love it if they gave the old Chinese empires some love too.

It would certainly be a breath of fresh air, were they to go back at the root of civilisation itself. The exploration of the most ancient sedentary communities in human history, unto the founding of the great old realms that antiquity has ever known. On top of all, I would say that Egypt and Babylonia would do wonderfully as dominant powers to play.

The Total Journal is back!

and today we have some Toxotai Syrakoi
The scale armored Syrian archers were considered some of the best archers in the world in the classical era, and almost all empires who came to the region tried to recruit them, most notably the Roman Republic/Empire where Syrains along with Cretans formed the majority of the archer contingents in the legions.

Stay tuned for next time when the heirs of Alexander starts the reclamation of the empire!

Do you recall that famous mournful theme that kept on haunting my head, which I mentioned at the beginning of the thread? Well, gentle attendees of the topic, I finally found the proper theme from the official Rome Total War soundtrack. I guess the very sound could easily describe all the sorrows the Elves had to endure throughout their grievous history. It might really make for an excellent lament about the Elder Days of Arda.

It was at the Survivor Series that the dark path of the Undertaker was born. Very interesting. I'm quite intrigued by the announcement of this new endeavour, even though I admit I wish the modern or contemporary eras were explored as well. We shall see. In the meantime, let us enjoy this forthcoming chapter, being aware that it's still a joy that games of this kind are even made in the first place.
