The Shire


They say Half-men dwell on the western lands,
Far from toils, decay and of mighty realms the fate,
So merry their existence is, yet naught of them could ever be lavish,
For the simplest things in life they much cherish.

Eönwë rejects the apologies of Sauron.

Thy fate shall not be in my hands,
Thou once a bright spirit of light were,
But thy might and arts the Enemy's design greatly served,
And thou in darkness and horrible terror eventually turned.

Despised and feared by whom dwelt in these sad lands,
A murderer of gentle souls and of fell spells the sorcerer,
Nay, I tell thee, I may not free thee from thy guilt,
For the Powers only of thy case the last judges shall be.

Be thou ever-cursed!

Tulkas ('Tulukhastāz' in Valarin) curses Ungoliant ('Wirilomë' in Vanyarin), after the death of the Trees and the defeat of the Valar's guard.


Be thou ever-cursed, fell beast of the Void!
Thee and thy horrible kin I shall forever despise,
Destroyer and Predator of Light,
Tulukhastāz doth not forget and none forgiveth.

Yet weeping and mourning good might do

Nienna mourns and weeps on the lifeless ruins of the Two Trees. All are shocked and upset at such desperate sight.


The noble Elda, the kind Maia and the mighty Vala,
All speechless and grievous, for the demise of an era of splendour and light,
Yet weeping and mourning good might do,
For our fire doth not die and hope always endureth.

Thither, ye shall

Ilúvatar advises its Angels head to Eä, if they long to live and exist as its Plan commands.


Who to see and live longeth,
Thither, ye shall.

Thou evil and shadow art

Varda rejects Melkor, at the dawn of reality.


Thou evil and shadow art,
Us our path thus far leadeth and hatred for me hereafter thou shalt bear.

Arda, diamond of the firmament...


Arda, great jewel of ours,
Diamond of the firmament, thou much strived and bore,
And more thou wilt, until the eternal hour cometh,
When anything of shadow shall fall and to the One all shall bow.


Note: the 'eternal hour' is the fate imagined by the poet after Dagor Dagorath, with Ilúvatar triumphant and time stopping its inexorable course.

The Teleri of Aman agree with carrying the hosts of Valinor across the sea, albeit deciding not to be involved in the slaughter and not to aid the cursed Noldor.


Our grief is great and still burning, yet the Powers' command may not be disobeyed,
Help we shall give, but no foot of ours on that blood-stained land is to be.

From the noblest kind they descended,
One chose the Immortals and the other's life in ever-lasting glory ended.

But lightning broke the demon's heart and his ruin against rock was smitten.

Yet much his body had to suffer, and so he was in golden woods sheltered.

In their blessed realm where we were invited,

Examples of all that is just and a virtue,
Long they to defend their right battled,
Being their desire the goodness of all,
Kings and Queens of immortals and mortals were made.

Mighty among the mighty,
To none permission or consent I must ask,
And I shall now sail, to seize the eternal life that to me rightly belongs.

Death thou shalt not defy and thy whole world with thee shall perish.

The Wise now forces united and as a sole act,
We may now rest well, as we know the guardians forever vigilant shall remain.
