I have actually given Gulzár a small role again, although I only edited it in a while ago. It‘s a passive ability that provides some support for the sorcerers when rituals are active.

The reason I was using Zaphrogor for the tier 3 Ritual that buffs the sorcerers is because Gulzár already had a big role in this concept, and Zaphragor is also a sorcerer. You are correct though that Gulzár would definitely be more fitting from a lore perspective. Now that Gulzárs role is by far less expansive than it used to be, it would be possible to use him as a requirement instead of Zaphragor.

I used wights as guards to provide some synergy with the wight improvement ritual. Also, as far as I know the sorcerers had a hand in creating them by cursing the dead of Arnor, so it seemed fitting to me.
A poison/plague aura would work as defence as well, although this already kinda exists. If I recall correctly, the spell that transforms the Angmar citadel into a stronghold of the iron crown gives the gate the ability to poison enemies.
