Patch 4.8.3 brings one thing above all: new maps! Attentive readers will have already read in the patch notes for 4.8.2 that we have added a new type of base to the game files: half-castles. With 4.8.3, you can now play these half-castles on new maps. They combine the defensive strength of castles with the smaller base of camps. Furthermore, as the name suggests, they are half-castles —meaning they're always open on at least one side. This opens up completely new possibilities for mappers: they can be placed on the edge of a mountain range, directly next to a river or lake, or together with another half-castle to form a large, contiguous castle.
Naval combat just got way more exciting
Combine various dwarven realms into a single castle
We hope this new type of base excites you as much as us and brings you a lot of fun. These first half-castle maps are just the beginning, and we have a lot more planned for them. You will hear more about that soon, so check them out in-game now!
We also have twelve additional new maps for you in 4.8.3, based on skirmish maps from the 1.09 mod for Battle for Middle-earth 2. The mappers Ecthelion, Temptation, and Powerkartoffel allowed us to adapt their maps for the Edain mod, and the first twelve of these are now included in 4.8.3. A big thank you to the 1.09 mappers for their beautiful maps!
Miscellaneous
As always, 4.8.3 also offers a number of minor balance changes, Quality of Life improvements, and, of course, bug fixes. Overall, this patch is relatively small and is intended to iron out bugs you've reported to us recently. For example, we're very pleased that save games featuring the Misty Mountains can now be loaded correctly again, and that catapults no longer attack objects like ravens or invisible objects. Balance has also been improved. For example, Beornings and Minstrels of Lothlorien have been given new abilities, Rivendell Landers have been slightly nerfed, and creeps of all kinds have been reclassified: Destroying them should now be more consistent as long as you successfully defeat the initial defenders.
Regarding the Quality of Life changes, we continued working on improved description texts, so that units and upgrades have now also been adapted to the new format. Furthermore, all hero abilities have been revisited so that most of them can now be used via autocast (right-click on an ability to have the hero use it automatically). Accordingly, we also improved the filters so that abilities are not easily wasted - for example, Gandalf should not use his Word of Power when attacked by a single orc warrior. However, to ensure that good players can still gain advantages through skillful use of their abilities, these filters haven't become too good either.
