Here's a gathering thread for all stuff LotR that's interesting or special in one way or another.

I'll start with a trivia collection about all three films:

"... he did not wish to disappoint diehard fans of the book trilogy."
lol, so ten years later he is just like "f*ck it, I'm gonna make my own hobbit movies with Azog and giant worms"?  8-|

You rather he'd added Blackjack and Hooters? :P

Regarding Helm's Deep, I read that the scene of the arrival of the Elves was the most difficult one to shoot, choreographically speaking.

Also, there are a lot of scenes that were completely deleted and that are thus unedited;
they were shot, for example, some sequences about the Goblins chasing the Fellowship at night, entering Lothlórien and being killed by the Elves.
Or some other footage, in which Elrond and Arwen go to Lothlórien to discuss about the war, and a dialogue between Arwen and Galadriel.

PJ still has many secrets to reveal :)

and to be fair... something that completely gets ignored most of the time: PJ didn'T want to direct the Hobbit movies... but after the whole crap that delayed production happened del Toro jumped off so PJ HAD to take over

just a bit of interesting trivia I've heard about the LotR trilogy. Originally, Arwen was supposed to go with the Elvish army to Helm's Deep and fight with Aragorn (I shudder to think of the love triangle we'd have been forced to sit through a great deal of in Return of the King).

Less annoying would have been Sauron's battle with Aragorn at the Black Gate. Quite a departure from the books (but then again, so was the Elvish army at Helm's Deep, the Army of the Dead appearing at Pelennor Fields instead of Gondor's armies and the Evenstar - which is, apparently, a jewel from Aman that Olorin gave to Galadriel who had Celebrimbor forge it into what it is - shatter so easily, and other things), but it would have been interesting to see the battle.

Another fun/interesting fact: do you know that initially, for the role of Galadriel, PJ and the other Writers chose Lucy Lawless instead of Cate Blanchett?  :)

Lucy Lawless is a popular New Zealand actress, who is mainly known for having played the part of Xena, the Warrior Princess, in the TV serie of the same name  8-)

Furthermore, the actor who plays the part of Celeborn, Marton Csokas, was present too in the Xena serie, playing the part of a War Lord  [ugly]

I like very much Lucy Lawless and absolutely love Xena, as a part of my own childhood; but, knowing how Lucy Lawless acts and what roles she is very good at, I have to say that I'm glad that they eventually have chosen Cate Blanchett for the part (also because Lucy Lawless got pregnant before the start of the shootings for LOTR)  :P

But I'm sure that we would have had a definitely fiercer and more warrior-type display of the Lady of Light.
We could try to imagine how it would have been like  xD

''In time of ancient Valar, Dark Lords and Kings, an Elf in toil cried out for a Hero.
She was Galadriel, a mighty Noldorin Princess, forged in the heat of the War of the Jewels.
The Silmarils, the Love for Valinor, Morgoth...
Her Courage will change Arda''.

The first one is definitely very familiar to me  :D

It is inferred, in the Silmarillion, that Varda is arguably the most powerful among the Valar, after the original Melkor (the first Vala, originally mightier that all the others combined together  [ugly]).
Varda is certainly not the most powerful Vala in authority, given that Manwë is the dearest to Ilúvatar and he was indicated by the Almighty God as the King of the World; but Varda is definitely the mightiest among the Archangels, since she represents Light, and all the Light in the Universe came originally from her, of which she is the only source  8-)
Light, as an element, is obviously superior to the other fundamental elements: superior to Air (Manwë), Water (Ulmo), Matter (Aulë) and Plants (Yavanna)  :)
But she obviously has to obey to Manwë, as all the other Valar, since his authority is unquestionable.

Thus, it was Varda who gave Life and Light to the Stars, to the Lamps and to the Two Trees of Valinor (and consequently to the Sun and the Moon), the greatest Creations of Arda  8-)
That's why she is, as it is clearly stated in the Silmarillion, the most feared and hated by Melkor among the Valar, the first one to realise, already in the Timeless Halls, that Melkor was the Evil; she then immediately 'refused' him.
Yes, he tried to approach her, but she refused  :P

And the first link represents perfectly how the Valar often mourned due to the constant destruction of their Creations, of Which the Two Trees of Valinor were the greatest in Splendour.
And also, after the Darkening of Valinor, Fëanor definitely didn't contribute to make the situation better...  8-|
How in the World could you hate or accuse someone like Varda, the most beautiful and powerful being in the Universe?  :)

Titel: Re: funny, clever, unique stuff
Beitrag von: CragLord am 15. Aug 2015, 11:59
Melkor was cunning by all means of that word, he knew about her powers and limits.
Yes, Varda indeed was second in power and creator of most powerful&beautiful things (powerful in means of good). And about that Manwë, I presonally NEVER liked him. During reading Silmarilion, I often went to rage, while riding some of situations in which  Manwë acted like disoriented child. That guy wasn't worthy of the main position, and always gave the impression of unconfident character.

P.S. Btw, nice analysis Walk. :)

Yes, Manwë often shows enigmatic traits of his behaviour, and can be misinterpreted as a 'powerless' King in its own Kingdom (Arda); Tolkien himself writes that he is a very good and merciful being, almost a stranger in the ruling dynamics of the World, who initially believed in the possibility of a second chance for his elder brother Melkor.
This merciful trait of him led, then, Manwë to make great mistakes and suffer the consequences of his good intentions.
But Tolkien also states that he is the dearest Ainu to Ilúvatar, and that Eru 'chose' him because he had understood deeply its Plan, more than any other Ainur, granting him an almost Universal Knowledge of the Destiny of the Universe (not complete though, since he is not omniscient).
We can thus say that, although his choices were initially really suffered and indirectly caused a lot of terrible consequences, he was right in the 'long term' of the events.

For example, after the Darkening of Valinor, while the Vanyar (and secondarily the Teleri) chose to remain 'loyal' to the Will of the Valar, Fëanor (also deceived by the lies of Melkor) accused Manwë of 'cowardice' for not immediately waging war to Morgoth in Middle Earth, disobeying to the Valar and starting, then, the Exile of the Noldor from the Blessed Realm.

But Manwë eventually was, at the display of the events, right and wise; he didn't move war to Morgoth in Beleriand to not wound another time the World and endanger the recently-awakened and vulnerable Humans.
Fëanor, instead, ended up being completely wrong in his own deep reasons and purposes, since, although the Splendour of the Noldorin Kingdoms of Beleriand, the Noldor never managed anymore to create an eternal and stable realm in Middle Earth, and recreate completely the Splendour of Valinor outside the Pelóri, suffering unspeakable sorrows due to Morgoth first, and then Sauron in the Second and Third Age  :)

Anyway, I definitely like Varda more; she is my favourite Vala along with Nienna.
The Elves immediately fell in love with her, when they reached Valinor  (**)

Walk, my friend, I really think you deserve some place in edain team as theoretic consultant or something like that. :)
There is no doubt you understand this matter better then me in general.
I just said Manwë was like he was in my opinion, simply I didn't like him in general, maybe he had some good choices and you explained consequences of his behaviour and thinking, but I simply don't like him in general, don't like that kind of behaviour which I describe like passive, in my opinion too passive. You was right all about him, this is simply my opinion, nothing more.
About Fëanor, it is better to not start here, he deserves new topic. I will just say he is in my opinion the most complex character in Tolkien world. There is no other person which could compare with complexity of his character! He was unique, I don't say he was right or wrong, simply in general he is very complex for analysis. :)

Thank you all, I'm honoured, but I think you are exaggerating a bit now  :D

Crag, I too like very much the character of Fëanor and recognise its fundamental importance, even though I don't agree with him and his actions  :)
If you want, you are more than free to start a topic/discussion about Fëanor and his deep purposes on the 'Annals of Aman' thread, since he spent the majority of his life in Aman and conceived his thoughts there.
And, apparently, searching through the Internet, Fëanor's opposition to the Valar is a very 'heated' topic  :)
It would be a more appropriate thread  ;)
Titel: Re: funny, clever, unique stuff
Beitrag von: CragLord am 16. Aug 2015, 20:35
You are welcome. :) ;)
I also like Fëanor, I will start maybe some day. I really don't remember too much right now, I read book few years ago, and I believe if I read Simrilion again, experience will not be the same, so I say maybe one day I will start discussion at your Annals of Aman thread.  :)
I will also say it was unadvisedly act from Fëanor!
But his self-confidence, determination, his fire-spirit, his acts in general (more bad than good!) are something worthy of very long and precise discussion. :)
He was born for big acts! Sadly there was a lot of bad but big acts after all.
More complex character don't exist in Tolkien world. That is my opinion for now. :)

yes you're most welcome my dear, also the one that uploaded the video in youtube already stated that if someone wants his reaction removed, he will remove it, but i guess these people wanted to record themselves so they could enjoy and share their funny reactions with all the fans of the hobbit :) , and honestly they made me re-live the whole experience when we first heard of the hobbit going to be released , i was so exited, and each time i saw a new trailer i just couldn't hold myself and wished if the movie was already there, it is really funny and great memory, but it is a shame peter jackson will never make another middle earth movie ( he said other movies could be made, but not my him or his team :( )

Indeed. That blondy's pet was almost mortally wounded from some spears and knives. Smaug is impervious to everything but a certain type of arrows shot on a certain single weak spot  [ugly]
The Talgerians used whole armies of dragons to rule Westeros. Smaug single handedly exterminated one of the most powerful kingdoms at the time.

I know it's not that accurate of a comparison, but hey we're all Tolkien fanatics  [uglybunti]

I've always taken for granted the fact of being an Elf, talking about this kind of imaginary questions  :)
Nevertheless, as you may know, there were in the History of Arda very few Humans who managed to pass the Sea and become Blessed Humans, embracing the Fate of the Elves in Aman (like Tuor).
I'm sure that the Valar would be merciful in their Judgement about my permanence in their Blessed Realm  xD

No, I don't like beer.
It's just a very personal taste of mine.
I basically like to eat every kind of Food, and my country surely has the best to offer, concerning this matter; but, I really don't drink almost all alcoholic things, like Beer, Wine and other things.
I just can't stand them, as I can't stand smoking  :)

i think of cutting the one with orcs marching out of dol'guldur since it has nothing to do with the white council, but the scenes between gandalf and radagast are very important , they play a very good role and since they are fundamental to the white council, i am pretty sure i would never think of removing them, i may even think of adding more, if they ever appeared in the EE ;)

Zitat

Many are the songs that have been sung of the duel of Glorfindel with the Balrog upon a pinnacle of rock in that high place; and both fell to ruin in the abyss.

But the eagles coming stooped upon the Orcs, and drove them shrieking back; and all were slain or cast into the deeps, so that rumour of the escape from Gondolin came not until long after to Morgoth's ears. Then Thorondor bore up Glorfindel's body out of the abyss, and they buried him in a mound of stones beside the pass; and a green turf came there, and yellow flowers bloomed upon it amid the barrenness of stone, until the world was changed.

This is interesting.
Apart from the relative joke, this is a particular picture that I have never seen before.

According to what I read throughout the Internet and what PJ said at the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con, this picture could be a part of a deleted scene and completely unedited in which the Goblins come out of Moria and attack Lórien, and are eventually exterminated by the Elves  8-)

I had already seen another picture of this kind in the past, representing a pack of Goblins in the Woods of Lórien at night.

This is really something I had never seen before, thank you, Adamin  ;)
In which obscure and secret places did you find it?  :P

Even though it's a deleted scene, I believe that we might have some chances to partially see these unedited footages in the future.
PJ, at that San Diego Comic-Con, glancely referred to a possibility of exposing all these deleted scenes in a future completed version of LOTR, along with a kind of 'museum' concerning all the monumental graphical, technical and cinematographic efforts poured into this amazing trilogy.

This particular image for example is from one of the oldest lotr image hubs I know of:
theargonat.cc (http://www.theargonath.cc/characters/characters.html)
Pretty amazing that it's still online. The website breaths early 2000s.  [ugly]

I've watched the whole Comic Con Panel and I would advice to not get your hopes up guys. ;)
PJ confirmed that there is some unused footage and that he MIGHT release it someday in some form. But he didn't really sounded like he WANTS to recut the movies or really tinker with the old footage.

Titel: Re: funny, clever, unique stuff
Beitrag von: Walküre am 26. Nov 2015, 19:16

Yes, it really breathes early 2000s, but it's indeed really detailed in collecting images of characters or fictional characters  :)

Of course, PJ never mentioned it directly, but it was an assumption of mine given the fact that he also refers to the whole 'circularity' of the LOTR trilogy like a single cinematographic masterpiece of more than 10 hours (including those deleted scenes) that should kind of deserve to be exposed in its all entirety (something that I could notice in various other interviews), even the parts left out in the theatrical and commercial versions.
At least, this is what I think that PJ has in mind, considering also the project of the 'museum'  :)

Furthermore, last but not least, you have to consider the economic element, since 'reboot initiatives' of this kind often lead to the release of reworked and expanded/extended versions of films or other multimedia realities  xD
Even though I don't really regard it as a negative aspect, since LOTR would surely deserve it  ;)

One of the best Tolkien oriented sites I have ever seen: http://wiki.lindefirion.net/HomePage

So much material to think about, so much ideas in general, graphic details etc :
http://wiki.lindefirion.net/CategoryCategory

A lot of ideas and informations concerning Khand : http://wiki.lindefirion.net/CategoryKhand
and other regions of Middle Earth.  ;)

Good place for every true fan of Tolkien world. :)

P.S. Site was in original whole in Finish, so some parts are still on that language in this English version.

Btw, there is some amazing fanart around that expands the hobbit movies in some great ways.

Wether be it Thror telling stories of Erebors glory to Frerin and Dis (http://www.deviantart.com/art/The-Hobbit-I-Dreamt-of-Erebor-455486398), or Oin and Ori at Balins deathbed in Moria (http://martym.deviantart.com/art/Balin-Fundinul-346037753?q=gallery%3Amartym%2F7871125&qo=21). The Two Trees lied on Ezellohar, a sacred green hill/mound outside the gates of Valimar (City that, I think, is represented as well, in the middle of that flowered field in the picture of Laurelin).
In the picture of Telperion, though, it seems that the Tree is placed near the Sea, which is wrong.

I too don't like so much this interpretation, as I always preferred a 'gigantic' and holier perspective of the Two Trees  :)

Nice picture Walk, it was also my all time favourite concerning presentation of two trees. :)
Yes, I knew that, but it was hill as you said, not some colossal almost "bald" rock, it was nice green hill. :) I really don't like previous presentation. xD

Also that is Valimar in background of picture you presented, one small thing which bothers me is how is possibe that Valimar is in the foot of PELÓRI... Mountains are too close to the city I think. xD

Very beautiful indeed. The Rivendell picture is very nicely done.

Well they are definetly gigantic, considering the tiny buildings right next to them in the hilltop. ^^
And the sea seems to me to be another field of flowers, though in the cool blue light it looks more violett/blueish.
Titel: Re: funny, clever, unique stuff
Beitrag von: Walküre am 27. Feb 2016, 23:36
Yes, Crag, Valimar shouldn't be at the slopes of the Pelóri, but on the opposite side in the middle of the evergreen fields of the plain of Valinor.
You know, every interpretation/picture is nice, but, still, not the perfect ensemble I desire  xD

If only I had some artistic and digital skills to represent my own vision...

Yes, Ada, they're gigantic, but still not so gigantic as I wish  :P
I feel the general overview and proportions are a bit, how to say it, 'out-of-atmosphere'.
I mean, there is something wild in that picture: the vigorous roots that come out of the ground, the asperity of the canyon-like hill...
The picture I showed, though simple, imperfect and a bit fairytale-like, fits well my vision of Valinor in which everything is majestically perfect and beautiful in all its aspects  ;)

That's the difference between makeup and cosmetics over CGI. Real costumes will always, ALWAYS be better than CGI when it comes to things like that.

For which I have only one answer:

Well, that's certainly right. However the original comment said
Zitat

Due to Gollum having a completely different physique than a more or less humanoid orc, the comment doesn't really apply. :D Those were just made in a computer because reasons, not because I'd be impossible otherwise. BTW: Personally, I don't see CGI as a problem, there are just too many examples of utterly great computer effects which would look strange at best if created via a practical effect -nevertheless, I totally agree with the picture's basic premise.
Everyone who watched the acorn scene will know the exact reason... :)

I actually never thought anything against CGI. But good CGI is Gollum, PS4 CGI is Azog.
I think it's very clear why the Hobbit didn't win a special effects Oscar, while the apes movie the same year won.

Due to Gollum having a completely different physique than a more or less humanoid orc, the comment doesn't really apply.

Still applies then, because the Trolls or Goblin King shown in the picture also have a completely different physique, like Gollum.
Same goes for the Goblintown Orcs and the Gundabad merceneries. Just watch the Appendices of the 1st Hobbit movie: You'll see the Goblintown costumes Weta made, and you'll know the reason why they ultimately animated them.

But good CGI is Gollum, PS4 CGI is Azog.
Honestly I don't really see a quality gap between those two in the movies. Both have great light reflections, muscle movement, and acting power.
Of course they used a bad picture of Azog for their comparison, but you might as well think of scenes like weathertop or the confrontation with the dwarves on the pine trees, were Azog looked great.

Since I also saw on the Internet, with valid reasons, that the CGI of LOTR is considered in a whole greater than the more 'modern' one of the Hobbit, what about the digital ambient scenarios/settings?
I think the Hobbit trilogy offers indeed some valuable elements.

For example, what would you say if you were to compare the LOTR Rivendell (based, if I'm not wrong, on a physical model) to the Hobbit Rivendell?
I think the latter is represented much better in its holy and sanctuary-like aspects.
The concept of the Sacred Valley is wonderfully rendered  :)

The photography of all the Rivendell scenes is almost perfect.

Cate is much more ethereal and 'deep' as an actress, but I reckon that Lucy's physique would have been more than suitable for that role, given Galadriel's legendary strength.

not sure if this is the right place to put this, but most of the "Edain Mod Feedback", I think, would be for serious discussion about the mod, and this is, well, more silly.

It seems to me that the modders created Mornamarth so that fans would be forced to use the most popular pronunciation of the Sindarin word "Amarth".

As a metal-head, I see this a lot. The Swedish death metal band Amon Amarth is often pronounced amOn amArth (the large, capitalized letters indicating where the syllable emphasis lies), even though I've never heard Amon Sul pronounced amOnsool. I've always pronounced it Amon sUl and Amon Amarth, with the syllabic emphasis on the first vowel unless there is any indication otherwise.

But with Mornamarth, it sounds odd to pronounce his name mornAmarth, as I usually would. But the popular pronunciation of Amon Amarth (as listed above) would make pronouncing his name "simpler", since it would be mOrnamArth or mOrnamarth.

I'll show myself out, thank you, but not after taking the etymology nerd of 2016 award with me. At least Professor Tolkien would be proud of me, lol.

A great find xD

You never know how many precious pieces the Internet holds hidden  xD

By the way, I like to think that there is a sort of 'special relationship' between Melkor and Varda. The lore offers some hints about it.
Varda is arguably the most powerful among the Valar (not in authority, though); the element she embodies and dominates, Light, surpasses in might and importance all the other Valar's. One could also assume that Light is the most vivid and evident resemblance of God in the World, and Tolkien himself says that Varda appears as fully covered by and emanating the Light of Ilúvatar, as a memory of the holy Timeless Halls.

Needless to say, any creation in Arda that was conceived with her Light and for her Light has always been the most beautiful and remembered in tales. Just to mention: Stars, the Two Lamps, the Two Trees of Valinor, the Sun and the Moon  8-)

Tolkien also tells us that she was the first Vala to understand and see through Melkor's true intentions already from the beginning, refusing and rejecting him immediately; Manwë, on the other hand, always fought against him, while, at the same time, feeling profound sadness and piety for the Evil whose nature he had never understood so clearly.
Varda and Melkor are thus Light and Darkness, forever bound to hate and fight each other.
Titel: Re: funny, clever, unique stuff
Beitrag von: Fine am 6. Apr 2016, 15:05
Yeah if I recall correctly there was a hint somewhere that Melkor might at one point have "had the hots" for Varda but was quickly rejected. Keeping that in mind makes the image you posted even funnier xD
Titel: Re: funny, clever, unique stuff
Beitrag von: Walküre am 6. Apr 2016, 15:17
And, the fact that she was the first who rejected him makes her the smartest among the Valar as well.
In your opinion, how did Varda vote when the Valar sat in council to discuss about Melkor's fate after his three-era chaining?

I have the slight suspect that she voted negatively  :D Unlike her husband, Nienna and other ones...  8-|
Titel: Re: funny, clever, unique stuff
Beitrag von: Fine am 6. Apr 2016, 15:21
I am convinced that she did indeed vote to show Melkor no mercy. ^^

After the fall of Angband, (again, if I recall correctly), harsh treatment was dealt to Melkor: His legs were cut off and he was bound with an even stronger chain forcing him into quite an uncomfortable body position; on top of that he was cast out of the Gates of Night.
I think I know whose idea all that was... xD
Titel: Re: funny, clever, unique stuff
Beitrag von: Walküre am 6. Apr 2016, 15:36
I wouldn't be surprised by that  :D

Varda had found a cruel punishment for Melkor long before (again, thanks to her farsighted mind).
She personally hallowed the Silmarils, in order to prevent any evil hand from taking possession of them. When Melkor stole them and held them for the first time, they immediately burned his hands, leaving a painful wound that would have always lasted, until the end of Time...  :P

So, she also gave the Silmarils a powerful magical property by herself, and, considering that the very Light contained in the Jewels can be regarded as hers, she is the ultimate legitimate owner of Fëanor's creations  xD

As I found it on the Internet, the picture does show that. Of course, as I admitted myself, it's an abstract of a concept. Yet I have to say that I had the opportunity to see even more abstract concepts relating to LOTR. Art is art. What matters the most is the intention of the artist, instead of the perceptions of the beholder (which may often be marred or simply personal)  ;)

I found this very high-quality piece on YouTube. It's an animated rendition of the poem Ozymandias, from Shelley. You might wonder what it has do with this forum and Arda in general, and so I will explain myself: not only does the composition deal with the theme of the fallibility of power, but it's obviously entrenched equally with antiquity and the decaying effect of time. The latter topic is widespread throughout all Tolkien's tales, reminding me, in particular, of the ever-present longing of the Elves for the blissful past of the Elder Days or of the Noon of Valinor itself; the main desire that set in motion the forging of the Rings of Power in the Second Age.

I was always excited about a Thor 3 movie, since he has kinda underused potential, but now im a bit sceptic.

I'm much interested and puzzled too. I really liked the second chapter of the Thor franchise, and I do have as a consequence some expectations too. Their choice of Cate Blanchett was quite unexpected indeed. Needless to say, I'm eagerly waiting for the final outcome of all of this. Seeing Cate in the shoes of a villain will certainly be a very special of an opportunity  ;)

Besides, I never watched Guardians of the Galaxy and I don't think I will in the foreseeable future either. I'm not particularly fond of the story (due to my personal ignorance on the matters as well), and, as far as I could judge, the bits of it that I had the opportunity to see didn't succeed in sparking enough interest in me. The epilogue of the Silmarillion, the very last page, tells the definitive fate of the greatest of the Istari, which coincides also with the end of the Third Age and Elven tales. Tolkien concludes the twilight of the third era of Arda by recalling Círdan's words at the arrival of the wizards, more than two millennia before. The Lord of the Havens, farsighted and wise, had foreseen the destiny of toil awaiting the mission of the Grey Wizard, alongside glory and success. He thus entrusts Mithrandir with Narya, the Ring of Fire, forged to rekindle minds to hope and valour, nourishing the sentiment of mankind which naturally rejects all sorts or prevarication or tyranny. Círdan foretells what is to be: as soon as Gandalf's mission in the world is fulfilled, the last grey ship shall depart from the Havens and the modern era of Arda shall eventually end.

One could not have finished such a wonderful book in a grander manner. The bible of Arda closes its tales with a paramount event taking place on the shores of the sundering sea. A sign. An omen. A marvellous coincidence... ;)

Zitat
Now all these things were achieved for the most part by the counsel and vigilance of Mithrandir, and in the last few days he was revealed as a lord of great reverence, and clad in white he rode into battle; but not until the time came for him to depart was it known that he had long guarded the Red Ring of Fire. At the first that Ring had been entrusted to Círdan, Lord of the Havens; but he had surrendered it to Mithrandir, for he knew whence he came and whither at last he would return.
‘Take now this Ring,’ he said; 'for thy labours and thy cares will be heavy, but in all it will support thee and defend thee from weariness. For this is the Ring of Fire, and herewith, maybe, thou shalt rekindle hearts to the valour of old in a world that grows chill. But as for me, my heart is with the Sea, and I will dwell by the grey shores, guarding the Havens until the last ship sails. Then I shall await thee.’

Black heart, scathed, which liberty is meant to choke,
Barred by nasty peaks, chained and covered by smoke,
The Dark Lord elected it as his fell seat, raging the mountain of fire, vomiting fumes,
A desolate waste it was rendered, poisoned and marred, cursed realm where lie silent tombs.

There was once a fair city, raised as a stone-made sentinel and blessed by the moon. A true guardian of the grand realm of Gondor, last remnant of a glorious lineage of great kings. Alas, the stronghold was set on fire and assaulted by the very foes it was supposed to keep at bay. Black legions swarmed through the gates and claimed possession of anything they managed to seize. But such sin was not the worst tragedy of the case, for a wicked sorcerer bewitched the mighty tower at the heart of the settlement and cast a wicked spell of tyranny. Thereafter, brightness was no more and the previous radiant nights turned into infinite days of desperation under the thick shadows of the near peaks. The agony and horror of its one-time joyful dwellers shall forever haunt the forlorn spoils of the fortress, while her twin-city lies on the slopes of the opposing mountains, ever-watchful and cautious...

A curiosity I found on the Web :) i'm sorry guys if there are some mistakes it's because I directly translated the post from Italian to English using Google (it is a bit long  [ugly]):

Zitat
In 410 d.C. Emperor Honorius sent a letter to the main cities of Britannia urging them to provide for their own survival. With this message, which has gone down in history as the "resurrection of Honorius", the emperor sanctioned the definitive Roman abandonment of Britain. Most of the citizens present in the region decided to stay on the island by strengthening their defenses. There was in fact no safe place to escape: ferocious hordes of barbarians already raged in Gaul, in Ispania and even in Italy. But for mysterious reasons the ancient Roman city of Calleva Atrebatum, located in the present county of Hampshire, was completely abandoned. Some scholars speculate that the main cause was the outbreak of the bubonic plague, which exterminated the population in a short time. Calleva Atrebatum became a ghost town, a heap of cursed ruins from which to turn off. Several legends of spirits that infested the site arose and for a long time nobody dared to settle there. But in 1785 a simple English peasant, wandering around the fields around the cursed city, found a rather unusual ring. This was in gold, much larger than a normal ring, and was engraved with the writing (in Latin) "Senicianus alive in the god". For about a century no more was known, until some archaeologists found a tablet in the surrounding area, bearing a bleak curse: "For the god Nodens. Silvianus lost a ring and donated half of his value to Nodens. Among those who bear the name of Senicianus no one is allowed health until he returns the ring to the temple of Nodens ".
It seems that the ring belonged to such a Silvianus, who saw him steal from Senicianus and then decided to hurl a curse on it, invoking the ancient Celtic god Nodens. The only way to break the anathema, for the thief Senicianus, would be to bring the ring back to the sacred temple of Nodens.

In 1929 the head of the team of archaeologists, Sir Mortimer Wheeler, communicated the outcome of his discovery to a friend, a certain J.R.R. Tolkien. In all likelihood the history of the Roman ring of Silvianus was the main source of inspiration for the famous opera "The Lord of the Rings".

The whole Weinstein case had even reached the shores of our beloved trilogy, somehow casting a shadow on the production phase of the early project.

New Zealand in all her mesmerising beauty. Fortunately, it was not needed to rely fully on CGI, when it came to outdoor sceneries. A fantastic land, at the ends of the world...
