In this thread, you can post small Rohan suggestions. There are no fixed rules for whether a suggestion should be posted as its own thread in the suggestions forums or in this collective thread, you  may decide yourself whether you think your idea needs its own thread. As a general guideline, though, an idea that can be presented in just a couple of sentences may not need its own thread and could be discussed here, preventing the forum from getting too cluttered. On the other hand, if you want to discuss an aspect of the game in great depth or propose something like an entirely new hero with a full new set of abilities, a new thread might be more appropriate.

Add a ability to Level 5 + Forged Blade units (or to Royal guards ?) = Spear Throw

The Unit launch spears, which make great damage on a target (same as Eomer's but less powerful)

Hello,

Would it be possible to have an extra Mount/Dismount ability for Eowyn so she can pick up merry whilst on horseback? Otherwise Merry is kinda useless when you are building a cavalry-army.
Also, Rohan's Spearthrowers don't attack anything unless you specifically click on a building or a unit. Perhaps they could be replaced with trained Archers which have better statistics than the Yeoman?

Thanks,
Glemli

Indeed, Meriadoc is usless after cavalary starts to take bigger part in army. I think too, that he should be able to ride with Eowyn (but only when she's disguised), and it should give her some boost too armour.  [ugly]

Could the discount for cavalry be returned to the peasant producing farm? One of the issues with Rohan is that it becomes very hard for the player to get enough money to switch from peasants to cavalry. If the discount was returned to the farm then the building of peasant military would be already assisting the switch to cavalry. If the player chose to continue with a peasant strategy it would not affect it since peasants already do not receive discounts.

Some issues with the idea are that it would eliminate the need for the stud farm. I do like the extra type of farm but the division of benefits between the two buildings, places so much extra financial burden on Rohan. Unless their economy was changed the stud farm just makes it more difficult to build a cavalry army, which should be the main forces of Rohan.
Along side the stud farm issue, I am not sure what the balance would be like. Would one building with all those benefits make Rohan's game too single minded and powerful?

These are just some ideas that I had, what are your thoughts?

Hey Edain Team, is it possible to add fire to the wall towers of Rohan? I keep finding that they do very little damage to any sort of siege engine and I know that adding fire damage would make that a little more level.

Thanks and Blessings

I don't think Rohan needs any better defense against siege units. There cavalry is already a much better way to counter them. Also, the towers and archers of all factions shouldn't do much damage against siege units.
Titel: Re: Brief Rohan Suggestions
Beitrag von: YeshuaEnthusiast am 20. Jan 2016, 20:31
mid game that would be the case, but in early game against multiple Isenguards for instance, their spears make quick work of the horsemen well before they can stop both the battering rams and catapults which take quite a long time to kill via towers. I could have a Rohan castle fully surrounded by arrow towers and still lose quite a few buildings to one battering ram.

I would prefer to see weaker towers with a fire upgrade (like Gondor), rather than towers strong against troops but weak against siege engines

Thanks and Blessings,

Micah

Hello fellow Edainers, my small suggestion is : can you give Theoden's herald ability to mount/dismount? Since 4.3 rohan can focus more on infantry, it would add more usage to this unit :)

Hey everyone.

Just wondering if any thought had been given to having Gamling be able to toggle between Bow and Sword (or Spear) while mounted?

I really love that all of Rohan's heroes can participate as Cavalry but I find I have a hard time working with Gamling because he is always separated from the pack with his Bow, making him an easy target.

Alternatively, what about giving him abilities that somehow benefits Rohan mounted archers when he switches to his horse, giving him more of a command role when using him with the Cavalry?

Well, I do not think this is necessary at all. Firstly, you can solve his loneliness by having Rohirrim Archers in your army that have the same range he does so that he is not left alone. Second, you can have him and Rohirrim Archers in a separate command group from the melee Rohirrim plus heroes so that you can situate them ideally on the battlefield.
Besides, on his horse he should be able to outrun most other units that attack him even if he is alone.

Merry and Pippin are two very alike heroes, literally with the same looks from afar and mostly the same skillset (witht the exception of different names and 1 different ability).
Not that I complain about this but the problem is their ability names are all that really differenciate them, so I thought it would be cool to give old Merry's level 10 power another name and icon to further add some varying flavour (though its function will stay completelt the same as it quite suits him).
My suggestion is to change the name to "Barrow Blade"; as in the books it was the very Barrow Blade, which was given to him by Tom Bombadil, that managed to deal some damage to the Witch-King and slightly stun him to give Eowyn the opportunity to slay him.
As for the icon I personally think a dark grey with a purplish shade coloured dagger facing the opposite as Pippin's Dagger of the Noldor would look pretty nice, but that's up to you of course. :)

I think "Dagger of Westernesse" would be more suiting, as it is said the reason the blade can hurt the WItch KIng is because it was made by the men of Arnor. It would be a nice link to the lore if the name is changed.

Another piece of Númenor's legacy that would be beautifully implemented in the game. Besides, I don't think this proposal deserves an own thread. I will thus merge it with Brief Rohan Suggestions  :)

Daggers of Westernesse were the more formal name for Barrow Blades. Just thought because Pippin already had the word "dagger" in his level 10 power's name it would be more unique to have "blade" in Merry's level 10 ability name.

I think removing Rohan Stables' requirement for Rohan Heroes to mount would be a good idea. I mean, it is strange that the Heroes from the Riddermark cannot ride a horse unless a Stable is built, yet Imladris heroes (for example) can.
Titel: Re: Brief Rohan Suggestions
Beitrag von: Walküre am 15. Aug 2016, 01:29
As far as I know, the connection to the stables was meant to restrain the wide range of action of those mounted heroes (in the early game, in particular) and thus balance them a bit. Also, it stresses even more effectively the whole horse-motive that highlights every aspect of Rohan. Furthermore, Rivendell is primarily centred on infantry and this pivotal fact would make that requirement objectively redundant.

Apart from gameplay reasons, if we were to focus on that logic, I would say that the Noldor of Imladris and their immortal leaders could probably do without stables in the first place, as their entire military knowledge has a millenary tradition (long before the establishment of the very realm of Rohan); Elrond must have surely learnt to ride a horse in the First Age, and Glorfindel in more ancient times  :)

I guessed the restriction could be for balance, because having them mounted early game could disrupt balance, and seeing it that way, you're right! It only annoys me slightly on the context of War Of The Ring, where having to build stables just for that can be annoying, specially when you have a full army.
Titel: Re: Brief Rohan Suggestions
Beitrag von: Walküre am 15. Aug 2016, 02:50
In the plainest logical sense, you are substantially right. One would deem natural that Rohan's heroes should be mounted freely as they were in the very first BFME1. The same about your reasoning regarding the War of the Ring.

Nevertheless, as I wrote, there's not so much more to be told other than it was mainly a decision concerning balance and gameplay. I would rather look at things in this perspective: Rohan is the cavalry-based faction by definition (the stables are its warfare's core) and it has the advantage of having many mounted heroes at hand, but this has to come at a price of a consequent restriction.

I thought that. Lore-wise, Rohan heroes should have the ability to mount freely, but then, if lore was always followed and no balance/changes were made, Rohan would have a huge advantage that would be unfair, because having almost all of their heroes with mounted abilities gives them a mobility advantage that no other faction has, and having it with no restrictions wouldn't be balanced. So if it's better for the game, I prefer it to stay the way it is now.
Titel: Re: Brief Rohan Suggestions
Beitrag von: Elite KryPtik am 15. Aug 2016, 14:27
Weighing in on this, the stable requirement for mounting at this point is, in my opinion, a leftover of 3.8.1 and an unnecessary gimmick.

It has never directly hurt my gameplay in any ways I can think of, but just on the pure fact of how many other factions get heroes who can mount, having only Rohan locked off by the stables actually makes about as little sense as it can make.

As you said Die, Rohan is a cavalry faction, they are the Horse Lords, and so why shouldn't their heroes have their mounts available freely? Lets do a quick comparison:
Rohan: 6 heroes who can mount and their hobbit, 7 total heroes.
Gondor: 4 heroes who can mount, 8 heroes total.
Mordor: 7 heroes who can mount counting black rider battalion, 9 heroes total.
Imladris: 3 heroes that can mount, 7 heroes total.

So with the available factions who have more than a single mounted hero, we see the majority have at least half of their available heroes as mountable heroes, with no restrictions at all except in Gondors case concerning levelling up the heroes. If you want to mount up Gandalf having never built a stables, you can go right ahead. Now obviously Mordor doesn't have a stables, but the point still stands for them as well. Finally, for Imladris, half of their heroes can mount and provide support to their already excellent cavalry, or just mount to escape from battle, no restrictions.

I can see no reason to retain this unnecessary restriction. All it really does is hurt gameplay, for example if you are doing an infantry strategy as Rohan(which is necessary much more often than you may think) and never make a stables, focusing instead on an Archery Range, you have literally no ability to mount your hero, whether it be to get them to the frontline or escape when close to death. It is, at the end of the day, a hindrance more than a feature.

Rohan Herald summoned by Theoden on foot had 1180 and summoned on horse had 1015 can the have this some amount of health it's little illogical than mounted herald is weaker

To have more health doesn't mean, that a unit/hero is stronger. There are other facts, which have his own meaning: armor, damage etc. So the mounted Herald isn't weaker then the foot one. ;)

Ohh ... but wait is this scale with Glourious Charge? .... why Theoden gives Fear resistance by defualt iam not sure if that bonus fit his role that much.Fear resistance would better serve as ultimate bonus for Glourious Charge imo .Going by movie Theoden Charge is one of the scenes when i think his man really stop fear being killed and they even scream DEATH!!! . Dont u think it would better serve as bonus to Theoden last ability ?

Hey Guys i have some improvmnents for Rohan Heroes when Theoden become cured i mainly want to focus on improving some of thier abilities

Eomer:

Leader of Exiles ability will be renamed to Marshall of Rohan additionally this passive ability makes Eomer deal AOE damage .

Ride of Exiled ability wil be renamed to Ride of the King this ability will deal 2x bigger damage and this ability will be avivable when Eomer is unmounted too

Eowyn

Shield Maiden ability will be renamed to Daughter of the Kings Eowyn armor increase about 100% to heroes and monsters

Theodred

I would like to see his abilities improved i mean they are fine but i would like to see whatif situation where Theodered ewentuallu become right hand of Theoden in war instead of Eomer

Garrsion of Meduseld renamed to Garrison of Rohan additionaly all Rohan sentry Towers armor increase about 50% too

Repair Work renamed to Repair of Rohan Marshall - 2x bigger Range and those buildings get 50% armor exluding Sentry Towers and Citadel

Defense of Riddermark additionaly affects Rohan Sentry Towers and they can be upgraded with Fire Arrows

Hama

Guards of Golden Hall summons 1 line of Guards of Golden Hall pernament player have possibility to upgrade them with Fire Arrows but they cant use swords .

Gamling

To the Armory ability summon pernamently 1 of 3 Rohan Infantry from 3.8.1 Lancers or Swordsman or Axeman .

The are standart Infantry but more useful than Peasents player can get from Farms  so let's make this ability more unique.Player can upgrade them or they will be alredy upgraded

Lancesr have standart porcupine formation
Swordsman are little more tanky than those other two units
Axeman alre strong vs heavy armor with upgraded axes are also strong vs light armor

2)~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I have some improvment for Theoden ability Herald of the King this ability summon Herald but imo he still lacks something .

My proposal is to depending on this if he is mount or dismount he become part of elite banner of Royal Guards or Guards of Golden Hall similar to Rohan General .

Unmounted

Player for 500 can make Herald become part of Guards of Rohan Golden hall they are in one line (5 guys) and use swords

This battalion inspires nearby heroes by giving them 15% armor and damage . Rohan Herald inspire his battalion by 30% armor and damage and fear reessistance.

Mounted

Player for 750 can make Herald become part of Rohan Royal Guards  they are in one line (5 guys).

This battalion inspires nearby heroes by giving them 15% armor and damage . Rohan Herald inspire his battalion by 30% damage and fear reessistance and trample enemies 50% less.

Edit:
Eowyn needs her shield updated is looks quite bad just look

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Like always i'm waiting for you'r feddback , criticism , improvments of this proposal .
Good Night

Hmm. It think this would make curing Theoden way too important. Yes, obviously it should be important, but as long as this stays a spell (that is on an optional track in the spellbook), it can't be this central.
Apart from that, most things sound brutally OP: Currently this is basically Loriens Gifts (as of 3.8.1) combing with the normal spell -for a tier 2 spell.
And no, we can't increase the cost, because of how important it is for Rohan (also this would further force the player on one single path).
Thus, I don't see any improvements compared to a bunch of problems.

Thank you for answer i very apperaciate this . You are right making Theoden spell Glorious King more important is wrong way to improve Rohan heroes .So what about make some of those ideas independed from Theoden and let those heroes earn this higher status or better abilities ?

Eomer ability Leader of Exiles on level 10 become Marshall of Riddermark making Eomer attack deal aoe damage.
Eomer ability Ride of Exiled will be moved to level 8. On level 10 become Ride of King Guard double damage effect .

Gamling ability To the Armory on level 8 become Armory of the King pernamently summoning randomly ONLY 1 battalion from this 3 Rohan militia with alerady heavy armor upgrade.

In the mean time i have idea for Rohan Second Heroic Troop .
Rohan Royal Archers requirment to train level 3 Archery Range and Fire Arrows.
When recruited they already get Fire Arrows. They will not be avivable to change weapon to swords . This make them diffrent than those summoned from Hama . Hama Royal Archers will be renamed to Golden Hall Guard becouse currently thier horde is called Royal Archers like my proposal and they will be summoned with only swords making them 25% more 25% more  resistant to damage .

What do u think ?

Also I've look the other units of the mod and they have quasi all the same sword model, I've so decided to make a new sword for Gamling Hama, The Royal Guard and for the other units of rohan.
Say me if you are interested and I can send you these models.

Just, don't forget that much more vital aspects are being worked on at the moment, alongside the difficulty of dealing with graphics. It means that similar suggestions could require time.

Technically all of them are the same units. Royal vanguard is a Rohirrim battalion that does not cost any CP.  Therefore it is normal that they do feel the same.  ;)

This is Edain, no 2 units should feel the same if they are built from different buildings and fulfill a slightly different role. Right now it feels lazy.

When you play, you can't really figure out which unit you are using until you hover mouse over them for a few seconds. In competitive play it is a slight problem. Yes, exiles have a slightly different capes ( more red-ish one I think ), but it is not enough.
Titel: Re: Brief Rohan Suggestions
Beitrag von: Garlodur am 1. Mai 2017, 18:08
There's absolute no need to call the Edain Team lazy here, in the first place.

Secondly, you say the one unit with three different names fulfill a different role, but with the same weapons, formation, upgrades and attributes I do not see the differences you claim exist.

Thirdly, you suggest one option already, mentioning the differently coloured capes/cloaks. This makes for a visual change, if that pleases you. Yet all Rohirrim in a battalion have different cloaks already so this would not really solve much of your 'problem'.

Fourthly, the forum is meant to house active discussions. It is one thing to provide feedback, but it needs to be constructive and possibly suggesting an alternative. If you want to participate in the discussion of how the Rohirrim, Exiles and Royal Vanguard should have different roles or looks, please share your ideas and they can be evaluated.

Cheers,
Garlodur

I am not calling them lazy. I imply that the current situation looks as a not finished job.

My claim is simple: you have 3 units, built from different buildings, they cost different CP, their building time is different, they fulfill a different role, they have 3 different names. Yet, they have the same palantir, same abilities, the look of abilities is the same, same upgrades. Why?!

There are plenty of easy solutions which frankly, don't need any discussion. Either the team will change sth or not. I have no intention to discuss if it's better to change their picture (big palantir), or to put "passive ability" with explanation text, or to change some ability pictures or formations. My "wish" is just to have some first hand indication which unit I am using without need to hover over them. If other people want to discuss, they are free to go.

They do fulfill the same role. I get where you are coming from, but the only differences between these units from a gameplay perspective is their timing. Exiles are the fastest option, vanguard the last, but apart from that they are all great for trampling, really not that great in melee compared to other cavalry and receive great support from the spellbook and the heroes. They serve as Rohan's basic cavalry, great in the early game to kill isolated archers and swords, gain mapcontrol and force your opponent to build pikes; with forged blades they serve as strong harassing units in the mid- and lategame when their impact in head-on battles dwindles due to their relatively low hp.

And they are definitively visually distinct. I have no issues telling them apart and I'm not even playing as much as I used to, so maybe just take a closer look and remember that they're all doing pretty much the same thing. ;)

I must agree with Garlodur and Elendil.

For future ideas and feedback:
Instead of simply criticizing and calling us lazy, actual suggestions would be helpful. If you made drawings or palantir pictures on how we could change the design, there is no reason in not discussing them.  :)
Titel: Re: Brief Rohan Suggestions
Beitrag von: Garlodur am 7. Jun 2017, 19:24
Hello everybody and the ET,

I wanted to suggest a small cosmetic change to Rohan cavalry that has to do with the Royal Bred Horses. The reason I bring this up now is because of the new Rohan spell book that has revamped this power to have a greater impact on Rohan's cavalry gameplay.

Basically, the current working of the spell is improving Rohan's cavalry units from level 3 on, as well as changing the horses' colour to white. The new spell doesn't change this aspect.

In my opinion, however, I feel that the white horses do not look very pretty and they do not fit well with Rohan's colour pallet in general. I find it rather takes away the unique aspect of Rohan cavalry armies that appear so diverse in origin (thinking of the movie's rendition of the Rohirrim's arrival to the Pelennor Fields).

I understand the reasoning behind giving visual cues to the active or passive workings of spells and abilities of all kinds, but I feel in this case it is quite overdone. Thematically it also makes not much sense. On the one hand, the passive ability is based on the fact that the Rohirrim have advanced animal husbandry which allows for successful horse breed and improved relations between horse and rider. On the other hand, we know of the Mearas, a horse breed considered royal and noble that only accepts riders of royal bloodline. Although Shadowfax and Snowmane are the most known examples, it is no rule that the Mearas are white, even if it were only for Peter Jackson's interpretation of the wild Brego. I want to break the binding aspect within this thematic, believing that better horse breeds are not always Mearas, and that Mearas are not always white.

My suggestion, therefore, is to keep the battalion's horses the colour they are (after all, the horses are not chameleons) except for the battalion's banner carrier. In this change the visual cue will be carried by the banner carrier, whose horse turns white, instead of the whole battalion's horses. I believe such a cue is sufficient as it is already in place to a lesser extent in the shape of unit levels floating above the banner carrier's head.

The reason for this change is to retain the unique Rohan colour pallet, while maintaining a significant visual clue for players that the passive spell has been bought and has taken effect over certain battalions.

I hope to have convinced you. Otherwise I'd appreciate a convincing answer from the team why they have chosen this arrangement.

Best,
Garlodur

Upgrades for Banner Carriers are not persistant when the Banner Carrier dies. So effect indications can't be done via the Banner Carrier.

I agree with you that white horses look very unpleasant to the eyes if done so excessively, but I'm not sure what other visual cues we could use use to make it clear they are now Royally-bred horses. Just different colour schemes altogether? No idea, honestly. A different aura perhaps. More armour on the horses? I was always a little surprised that the riders were visually updated, but the horses were somewhat left untouched.

I like the reasoning behind this change. We'll have to wait on the balance pros but I think this would make a the Royal Guards a more attractive option in addition to giving an immediate bonus to curing theoden, an action that doesn't come without consequences as you lose a great amount of buffing capabilities early on.

I like that idea!
I'll keep it in mind :D
Edit: I meant the first one: activating the royal guard with the new central Spell xD.
