Hmmm, but that would make Ugluk's ability non unique, tbh.

Then, after reading your words, I went straight forward to two thoughts, about two towering giants:

Both representations, use spear and sword and shield, apparently using the spear for the first assault.

What if this brutes can be customized, to take spear or sword and shield, the great shields of the uruks seem rather good for them.

If the player chooses the spear, they could deal more damage to cavalry and make their fellow dunlanders fiercer, as Boagrius does when yelling to its people.

If the player chooses instead sword and shield, they could -and i will quote you, dear Elendil- grant them or surrounding Dunlendings some kind of resistance to trample damage. Both abilities, should be activated, thus letting balance to happen

And the third option, those with the enormous axe!

I think this can make more sense for this unit.

I think their two abilities do establish some lore for the Brutes. Especially their second ability is clearly pointing to the centuries of hostilities with Rohan (Death to the Horse-men! is quite unambiguous, no? xD)
But that said, I wouldn't be opposed to another, very high-level ability for the Brutes that maybe grants them or surrounding Dunlendings some kind of resistance to trample damage or even temporary immunity to trampling altogether.

ja würde zu den Türmen optisch auch relativ gut passen, finde die Idee gut. Könnte man dann direkt auch bei den großen machen, die kosten immerhin deutlich mehr.

Oh well, i forgot about that increase of his armor, my bad, hehe ^^.

The fact isn't about creating more random units, it's just i feel this guys dont fit at this upgraded Edain, they did fit when Edain was young, I was a true fan of using them.

What I mean is that every mechanic, every unit has some deep lore within. And the brutes seem just a random add. Maybe in the end Dear Necro was right and I just relied too much into the Isengard article lore, hehe ^^

You know, this is maybe crazy, but it just came to my mind, why dont you switch places, make the brutes a temporary summon of the minions of the white hand, and the other guys -just forgot thier names- available at the gatherstow, already at rank 2 and a single brute leading them hehe ^^

Oder das Upgrade errichtet die Öl-Schachte genau wie auf Festungskarten einfach an den Mauersegmenten im Ausgangsbereich des Lagers.
