One Of 2015's Most Popular Mods Is From A 2006 Lord of the Rings Game

Mod DB is one of the best places to download fan-made add-ons, and every year, the community votes on their favorites. I expected this year’s biggest PC games—Fallout 4, The Witcher 3—to dominate the list but, uh, nope. Instead, tons of people voted on a mod for a 2006 Lord of the Rings strategy game.

There’s good reason for that, though. It’s an ambitious mod, one that might as well be an unofficial sequel. (There’s little chance EA will make another one.)

Edain Mod, released in March, helps make Battle For Middle-Earth II: Rise of the Witch King more like the original game and goes super deep on Tolkien lore.

Die Nutzer der beliebten Mod-Datenbank ModDB haben über die beliebteste Modifikation des Jahres 2015 abgestimmt. Überraschenderweise befinden sich weder Fallout 4 noch The Witcher 3 oder GTA 5 in den Top 10.

Die englischsprachige Webseite ModDB ist wohl eine der populärsten Datenbanken für von Spielern erstellte Modifikationen. Zum Jahresabschluss 2015 haben die Betreiber ihre Nutzer nun dazu aufgerufen, über die beliebteste und aus ihrer Sicht beste Modifikation der vergangenen zwölf Monate abzustimmen - und das Ergebnis weiß durchaus zu überraschen.

Das Rennen gemacht hat nämlich nicht etwa eine Modifikation für die beliebten und aktuellen Blockbuster-Titel GTA 5, The Witcher 3 oder Fallout 4 - sondern eine für das mittlerweile neun Jahre alte Strategiespiel Der Herr der Ringe: Die Schlacht um Mittelerde 2.

Von der Community auf den ersten Platz gewählt wurde die Edain Mod. Mit ihr werden nicht nur die grafische Qualität und die Hintergrundgeschichte aufgepeppt, sondern auch diverse tiefgreifende Gameplay-Neuerungen vorgenommen. Unter anderem finden etwa mit Lothlorien und Rohan zwei neue Fraktionen ihren Weg in das Spiel - und mit ihnen auch neue Einheiten und Helden, auch für die bestehenden Fraktionen.

Gioco: Battle for Middle-earth II: Rise of the Witch King

Così come i due gradini più bassi del podio sono stati occupati da mod molto completi ma anche piuttosto datati, la palma di miglior mod 2015 per i lettori di Moddb spetta a un progetto che ha visto terminare nel corso del 2015 il suo lungo percorso. Si tratta dell'Edain Mod 4.0 per Battle for Middle-earth II: Rise of the Witch King. Una modification maestosa innanzitutto dal punto di vista grafico: il reskin delle unità e dell'ambientazione è stato semplicemente eccezionale e nel pieno rispetto del lore della saga del Signore degli Anelli su carta ma sopratutto di quello che si vede nella trilogia dei film di Peter Jackson.

In seconda battuta sono state introdotte modifiche sostanziali al gameplay troppo complesse per essere sintetizzate in poche righe ma molto apprezzate dalla comunità: sotto questo aspetto molti considerano l'Edain mod in questa sua incarnazione come un vero e proprio Battle for Middle-Earth III in pectore. Ai contenuti originali si aggiungono nuove unità, missioni e mappe create da zero ma sopratutto eroi da imparare ad utilizzare al meglio per sconfiggere i propri nemici. Il tutto con un completo supporto in singleplayer ma sopratutto multiplayer per chi ha ancora installato sul proprio PC uno dei più bei strategici dedicati alla Terra di Mezzo.
