Mablung & Damrod
« am: 31. Mär 2016, 10:51 »
First I would like to say, that this idea is not to introduce two more full powered Heroes. I would like to see these two units to be consider as "Support".

Mablung and Damrod, available from the rangers camp (These two rangers feature in about three chapters of The Two Towers).

Mablung could weild a spear and Damrod a bow (as references in the two towers). They both have toggle weapon to a sword (It is mentioned in the book that they both weild swords as secondary weapons).

Roughly 2000 health. 20 command points, and cost 750 each. This is to ensure they are not as powerful as Boromir or Faramir, but they can be useful if used correctly.

I understand Gondor already have a ranged hero, but make Damrod have 30% less range, (reference to him thinking he saw gollum but was unsure).

As for skills I think the following would be appropriate and all the following abilities should be shared.

Warm Welcome (passive), Gives team mates (other factions on same team, not own troops), 15% Armour & 15% Damage (reference to how they treated Frodo and Sam). The main idea behind this would be whilst playing with a teammate, Mablung/Damrod could be used to support their faction, this would add another tactic that players could use, but it wouldn't be essential.

Long standing friendship, whilst both are on the field they gain 20% Armour. I felt that because they are always mentioned together in the books it would be likely that they would be friends and keep an eye out for each other on the battlefield.

Level 3 Strong Voices, Stuns enemies with fear (reference to when frodo and sam heard them). I have been thinking about this one, because Gondor already have a stun in the form of Boromir's Horn, it may be worth changing it to lowers enemies armour, otherwise Gondor could double stun.

Level 6, Guard Order, Roots an enemy in place, (reference to them looking after frodo and sam under orders). I don't think Gondor currently have a root skill, (Not sure).

Level 8, Stay at Camp, Whilst in the 50m of a rangers camp, production of the camp is increased by 15%, and the camp also has the features of a well. (This is referenced to how faramir left them back during the Ambush). This would change Gondors play style alittle to having a place to fall back on, similar to Rohans Bell tower.

While I think this is an interesting idea, I think its too specialized and hard to implement with a good balance. Gondor already has one of the strongest hero rosters in the game, and I really don't think they need any more heroes.
Arise! Arise, Riders of Theoden! Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter! Spear shall be shaken! Shield shall be splintered! A sword day, a red day, ere the sun rises! Ride now! Ride now! Ride, ride to ruin, and the worlds ending! FORTH EORLINGAS!

I think that they could be just made like shagrat/gorbag so it wouldn't increase much, number of gondor heroes.

And one more thing - fiefdoms cheftains should be implemented as well. They could be just like rohan capitains.

I dont like term "Hero" for these units. They wouldn't be able to hold their own against a medium force and they certainly couldn't stand up to another hero.

I was thinking that in the book, Faramir left these two at camp whilst he ambushed the Harad, so these two wouldn't of been his best fighters. That's why I thought they should have low stats, they could maybe take on one battalion each but any more than that would be difficult (It says in the book that some men of the west fled the ambush and were pursued by Faramir, Mablung and Damrod threw themselves infront of Sam & Frodo to protect them).

Whilst they aren't a patch compared to Eomer or Boromir, these two could be very unique by providing support, the idea of the camp having healing features whilst they are around suits their characters well, because I imagine that they would of been in charge of preparing for when the wounded came back from the ambush.

Maybe they can be used in a way where they enhance the Ithilien Rangers, such as give Mablung and Damrod an ability where they can give the Ithilien Rangers access to switch between swords or lances depending on the hero.
Or maybe they can upgrade themselves to lead a squad similar to the Rohan Marshalls from the Exile camps where they function as an ambush unit with either Swords or Spears; stealthed by trees lying in wait for unknowing cavalry to run into them, etc.
I think the Ithilien Rangers were badass and I think it would be awesome if they were given more diversity ^^.

I was using the Marshalls of Rohan the other day, and because they only have 2000 health it means you actually have to think about what you are doing when using them. For example you cant just charge a squad in you have to keep them as support.

In the books the rangers do have spears, so it would be lore appropriate.

Although my initial thought for these two was non combat, hence the power to change the features of the rangers camp so it also has healing. Maybe it could just be an upgrade to the rangers camp, the same way as upgrading the bell tower of rohan. Although this would take away the unique feature that rohan current has.

I really like your idea of having these two as mini heroes for Ithilien :). I also like your idea of the Ranger camp to have some healing properties; be it from a purchasable upgrade or an ability through one of the two heroes, though I think the Dol Amroth outpost already has a healing upgrade. Maybe it could be moved over to the ranger tent instead since the Dol Amroth outpost already has loads of other defensive options with buffs to units around it xD.

I think the idea of the mini heroes being similar to the Rohan Marshalls but working as a tactical ambush unit that can change into a squad of stealthed lancer or swordsmen, etc. when they are close to trees or cliffs would be a fun addition to the Ithilien Rangers' playstyle. You would be able to station them to areas on the map that you think would be a strategic point for an ambush.
The Ithilien Rangers very often fought with guerilla warfare and ambush tactics where they were feared by the enemies of Gondor. So having this ambush factor really could work with the lore; making the opponent wary of where the specialised ambush units could be stationed in fear of walking into an ambush.
You would be able to strategically lay in wait to ambush unaware forces such as a cavalry force if you chose to upgrade into the lance squad for example; and they would not be able to avoid the counter trample damage caused by lances that cavalry could normally kite around with ease.
The mini heroes could even have a passive when they come out of stealth after successfully ambushing an enemy unit, they could have increased attack, armour or attack speed for a few seconds; adding more fear factor to the rangers xD.

I think we may be on to something.

I wasn't aware the DA outpost had healing features, because I have never used the Knights of DA, in my mind I don't consider them units of Gondor. That's just because I haven't got that far in the book yet. (I'm still open to a change though).

See in the book the rangers were able to take down the beats of the east, they used spears/lances. Apparently the enemies of Gondor wouldn't take them roads purely out of fear of the rangers. I know we have tower guard but your right, the rangers need a way of trapping enemies in an ambush, so maybe setting up a roots skill on the mini heroes would be a good option.

In the original BFME, I was disappointed with the ambush mission because the swordsmen were just general soldiers of Gondor. I used to think why would the normal soldiers be preparing the ambush, they can easily be spotted.

I also imagine the effects of this in PvsP would be very interesting.

I really liked your ideas. I will offer to solution.
1)Make Damrod and Mablung two upgrades in the camps. Once purchased. You can upgrade two of your ranger battalions with banner carrier as damrod and Mablung. Damrod will offer increased melee damage, while Mablung will offer resistance against trampling. This take away the shortcoming current rangers are facing without denathor captain ability

2) We can make a copy of rohan Marshall system

The ranger system could be changed completely.

Move it to a Outpost rather than settlement.

Make it have the following upgrades

Well Supplied - Nearby units have greater Moral +20% Armor
Prepare for Wounded - The outpost gives out a healing effect
Prepare Ambush - The player can select an area close to the outpost where enemy units are stunned and 2 battalions of fully upgraded Ranger spearmen and 2 Battalions of Ranger Archers are summoned for a short while.

Heroes
Faramir - (Ranger State) I think he will be well suited here because he is a very powerful hero to obtain early on.

Mablung & Damrod -

Stats
Around 3000 HP each and 25CP each

Abilities (as described in OP)
Long standing friendship,
Level 3 Strong Voices, Debuff
Level 6, Guard Order

Units (All the ranger units have cloaking features)
Ranger Spearmen - When they reach level 3 they obtain a passive the slows all enemies (Not just cavalry) This is because it would be likely they would of kept the enemy at a distance whilst the archers hammered them with arrows.

Ranger Archers - When they reach level 4 they do +10% damage to all enemies that are slowed, this is to make them deadly when grouped together with the spearmen as described above.

Mounted Faramir could be available from the fortress (But unable to dismount) If he is recruited in his ranger state then he is unable to recruited as his mounted state and vice versa. He needs some buffs though, I think hes alittle underpowered.
This would also mean that Faramir would gain an extra slot for another power when in either state.

Open to discussion. What do you think?

I like the idea of these two but maybe they could act as a summon for Faramir, like Haldir's Borderguards, you could call it a ranger ambush of sorts.

A summon for Faramir could work, but again I wouldn't consider them as a combat role. Although in the book these two try and cut off some fleeing Harads so it would be within the lore. I just hope that the edain team can find a role for them because the feature so heavily in the book.
